Delta is launching several new systems in all of its series – CellD, MidD and CabD.
The new inverter systems for telecoms provide a modular UPS for AC power back-up by combining Delta’s high-quality modular inverter, static switches and DC power systems. Thanks to their overload capability, the inverters are able to deliver high start-up currents required by appliances such as air conditioners. In addition, the inverters scale up to 30 kVA, enabling flexible use.
The SSW Series static switches act as electronic switch between the AC mains and the efficient Delta API
The MidD medium power systems, APS 1500A-230-6 SSW and APS 1500A-230-8, are the first to come on the market by the end of the second quarter of this year. The compact size and flexible configurations make difficult site access and installation easy. The characteristic of this system is to support different installation types such as wall mount.
In early Q3, we will bring out several new scalable small CellD rack systems that can be integrated into any standard cabinet or outdoor cabinets, and large CabD systems for core network applications.
Especially in emerging markets with unstable AC utility, existing site upgrade with such inverter systems allows different operating mode during the mains outage. This enables fuel savings leading to significant operating cost reductions..
To further strengthen the versatile remote communications options, we have now introduced SMS alarms that help operators react quickly to maintenance needs. The Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) also contributes to ensuring the accuracy of site information.
Delta has upgraded the energy efficiency of two rectifier series. “DPR 2000 and DPR 2900 are the new members in the EnergE family, with an energy efficiency exceeding 96%. The rectifiers are now applicable with PSC 3 that provides an additional package of sophisticated energy saving, site management and maintenance supporting functionalities,” says Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager for Power Conversion.
DPR 2900 is an upgrade from the previous DPR 2700 model. DPR 2000 is a lower power model providing energy savings for medium power applications.
Delta is opening a new office in Senegal in the second quarter of 2010.“We already have an office in South Africa, and the opening of our Senegal office is another strategic step for us on the African continent. Dr. Chance’s wife Prof. Shoko Nioka acknowledged Mr. Cheng for his work on changing people’s mindsets towards environmental protection and energy efficiency.
New software for PSC 3
News from the controller front! At the beginning of the year, we introduced the new software version (v2.50) of our PSC 3 telecom power system controller. PSC 3 now includes a new data-logging functionality, which enables the flexible logging of events, alarms and measured data. The key benefit of this functionality is that it allows you to get a good overview of how the power system is performing without physically visiting the site. In addition, the logged data helps in planning and optimizing maintenance procedures.
PC-free adjustments for CSU 502 The CSU 502
The CSU 502 controller’s system parameters are now even easier to adjust onsite. The maintenance technician no longer needs a PC for commissioning or maintenance. Instead, the technician can use a control stick to navigate the user-friendly LCD display menu. In addition, we have developed an optional fan control module for CSU 502 to enhance its performance in outdoor applications. The fan control module allows you to optimize the cooling performance and energy efficiency based on actual temperatures – with an integrated user interface for all functions.
Delta’s management teams from Europe, the Middle East, Africa and UPS business headquarters were pleased to meet and work with partners from 11 countries, including Cameroon, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malta, Pakistan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Over three intensive days, the partners worked on how to capture new market opportunities, learned more about Delta, and of course, made valuable contacts.
Focus on the Middle East and Africa
The Middle East and Africa (MEA) markets are among the fastest growing and developing markets in the world. We believe that this momentum will boost UPS demand over the next decade. Delta is working on strengthening relations with local partners and providing best-in-class energy-efficient products.
MEA customers need UPS to supply reliable power and to protect their precious data and electronic devices from power problems. To this end, Delta announced two high-efficiency products, the NH Plus series and the GAIA series, to partners in this region.
What can we do for you? Let us help you in building a profitable and sustainable business!
In his welcoming speech, Mr. Cheng commended Mr. Friedman for his “efforts and contribution to focus people’s attention on the huge climate problems we have created,” and said Mr. Friedman’s most recent book Hot, Flat, and Crowded is “the best tool to tell the people what we should do.” Mr. Cheng reaffirmed that Delta is doing whatever it can to make sure that we continue to improve the energy efficiency of all our products.
Mr. Friedman visited Taiwan to give a speech at the “Hot, Flat, and Crowded” forum held on 12 January 2010 in Taipei. In a panel discussion held at the Taipei International Convention Center, Friedman, Cheng and other influential people shared their views on the development of renewable energy and environmental protection with a full auditorium.
Vice Chairman and CEO Mr. Yancey Hai emphasized the importance of working closely with Delta’s distributors in order to tap into customers’ needs and to create a win-win situation. Mr. Hai spoke about Delta’s hard work on addressing environmental and energy-related challenges – some of the most critical issues the world will face in the first half of the 21st century.
“We are offering our customers such a robust solution for several reasons: in our solution, a single unit replaces several small ones, and the system can be expanded easily. Furthermore, the reliability of our power supply systems creates significant cost savings in the long term,” said Motaz Al Ma’ani, Regional Sales Manager at Delta. “This first system provides 6,000 A, but in the future we will be delivering systems supplying up to 10,000 A. This is an important opening for Delta. We are proud to take part in securing the reliability of telecom services in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” he continued.
“The system has been designed especially for telecom exchanges and data centers, the key hubs in telecommunications,” said Akram Aburas, CEO at ACES, a long-term partner of Delta. “We are pleased to present the product to the country’s most important operators. ACES delivers turnkey solutions that include system installation and deployment,” said Akram.
“The development and design of such a product requires advanced R&D expertise and seamless cooperation. Indeed, Delta would like to thank ACES especially Power Manager Mr. Mazheruddin Khaja, but also Delta’s global team for the successful outcome,” Motaz concluded.
Based on MCS6000 series, this system was designed and manufactured in one of Delta’s state-of-the-art ISO9001 and TL9000 certified plants, where the patent, unique 3Phase, and very high energy efficiency 6kW ESRC-48/100A rectifier modules are produced.
The highlights of the year included the launching of several highly energy-efficient products. They include, for example, the NH Plus UPS products in the 20–480 kVA range, as well as our EnergE rectifiers. In other words, we have been implementing our mission of providing solutions for a better tomorrow in our product development.
We are already looking at 2010, when we are planning to launch new products that help our customers cut their power consumption – and costs.
Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2010!
Delta team
The benchmark system built for TIM is based on Delta’s DPR 3500B rectifiers. Up to 128 rectifiers can be installed in the system. The superb energy efficiency and 3.5 kW output of the DPR 3500 rectifier ensure sufficient total output in a compact size.
The system can be controlled remotely using the PSC 3 controller. The controller features integrated Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) functions to enhance flexibility, monitoring and site infrastructure management. Other key features of the PSC 3 include advanced battery management and testing methods.
“The performance of the system is impressive,” said Hewton Seiji Hiroki, CEO at Delta Energy Systems Brazil. “Thanks to a technology that offers high energy density, the system is very compact in size. Yet, the dimensions of the system are amazing! The only alternative to this system, which boasts a width no less than 5180 mm, would have been a configuration consisting of several power supply systems.”
“However, squeezing the required output into a single unit has brought significant cost savings for our customers. In addition, our first-class modules provide the lowest total cost of ownership in the market.”
“The design, manufacture and deployment of a tailored, exceptional system is yet another demonstration of the cutting-edge expertise of our Engineering Team,” he continued.
The system was installed in Rio de Janeiro, where it now secures services for mobile phone and broadband users.

“With the update we can now better showcase our acclaimed product lineup. We have created an easy-to-use service where customers can quickly locate all the information they need,” said Corporate Senior Vice President and General Manager of Energy Solutions Business Group Albert Chang, managing both telecom power and UPS. “The basis for the new Web service has been our customers’ feedback. For easy access to company information we have linked the product site to Delta Group’s internet pages.”
“In addition to comprehensive product information, the site now has dedicated sections for sustainable development and total energy efficiency. This is important to us as Delta puts a lot of efforts on environmental issues. In our telecom power system designs, for example, we pay attention not only to efficiency of modules but to system-level energy efficiency, material consumption, transportation, the need for maintenance visits, fuel consumption and cooling solutions”, said Kirsi Juntunen, Marketing Manager.
“We hope that our customers will find the new site very useful, but we’ll also be happy to receive any feedback on the service for further development.”
The second new launch, the new DPR 4000B rectifier series, also reach an efficiency rate of 95%, the highest on the market for its power range. Leading-edge energy-efficiency together with the highest power density and intelligent controllers shows Delta’s commitment to sustainable development.
Cost savings with an easy replacement
“The new rectifiers offer energy savings for all power needs. When replacing older rectifiers, they save thousands of kWh annually. The environmental effects are significant and the cost savings can amount to thousands of US-dollars, especially in remote sites where power is generated by diesel generators,” said Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager at Delta Energy Solutions Business Group. “The extended operating temperature range enables further energy savings by reducing the need for cooling.”
For Delta’s customers, it’s easy to switch over to the more energy-efficient modules. Even upgrades of existing installations are straightforward plug-and-play. The new DPR 2700C can replace old versions of the same to increase efficiency, and the DRP 4000B replaces the DRP3500B series as a retrofit.
Availability
Both products, the new DPR 2700C and the DPR 4000B rectifier series will be available from the end of October 2009.
“Many of our rectifier series have EnergE-labeled products, but Delta has set strict criteria for these individual products. They all have the world’s leading energy efficiency in their specific power range, and, moreover, always an efficiency of 95% or higher. We want to make sure that EnergE is a real promise of efficiency,” said Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager at Delta Energy Solutions Business Group.
The energy efficiency of modules refers to how efficiently a module converts primary into secondary energy without losses. Power density specifies how much power is packed into a single unit of volume. It is essential in electronic devices as it defines the product’s current flow in relation to size.
Currently DPR 4000B and DPR 2700C rectifiers have the EnergE label.
Delta India took part in the event, and Matti Heikkilä, Product Manager at Delta Energy Solutions gave a presentation on the subject of telecom industry and sustainability.
The ICT sector currently generates approximately 2% of global carbon emissions, more than two thirds of which are generated by network infrastructure. In addition to concerns about the environment, conference discussions focused on increasing energy costs and the growing need to find energy-efficient solutions within the industry.
Increasing base station efficiency is crucial for energy efficiency. Nevertheless, alternative energy sources such as solar energy, wind power and organic fuels are also important in going green. Certain forms of renewable energy have the additional advantage of enabling reliable telecom services in rural areas.
The title of Matti Heikkilä’s presentation was “Key Drivers for the Telecom Industry to Implement Green Strategies”. In his presentation, Mr. Heikkilä explained the Delta philosophy of total energy efficiency. Instead of just working on the energy efficiency of individual modules, Delta is striving to achieve lower energy consumption at the system level as well as over the equipment lifecycle.
Delta recently launched its new EnergE line of energy-efficient rectifiers. In addition, the company offers advanced controller options for reduced energy consumption. Delta’s product line also includes new renewable hybrid system solutions, which in principle enable CO2 emissions to be eliminated altogether.
All this adds up to significantly lower total cost of ownership.
Green Telecom India 2009 drew together more than 300 telecom, power and energy executives to exchange views on the emerging trends, technologies and services in the field of green telecom.
“The event was an excellent forum for sharing thoughts with key players“, said Dalip Sharma, Managing Director at Delta Energy Systems India. “The day proved how large a role environmental consciousness now plays in our field. At Delta we are extremely proud of our green solutions. But we also look at the whole picture from the viewpoint of sustainable development. This approach covers rectifier efficiency and power density, intelligent control and monitoring solutions, energy-efficient cooling solutions – and our whole corporate culture. We know that we are the leading green solutions company in our field, and we are proud of that. And I’m glad to say that we have managed to reach this leading position without losing an inch in product usability and reliability.”
Cost cuts with efficiency and modularity
The NH Plus series maintains an efficiency of 94% even under common loading conditions - something with which most products currently on the market cannot compete. Depending on local energy costs, the NH Plus series can save customers approximately USD 2,500 annually in electricity bills.
A further cost-reducing feature of the NH Plus series is its hot-swappable modular structure. Each power module delivers a power density of 20 kVA in a 3U chassis. The total power options include 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kVA in two cabinet types. This unique modular structure allows IT managers to protect their data centre facilities from power fluctuations in a flexible and scalable way. Other advantages include lower initial acquisition costs as well as minimized MTTR and system downtime.
In addition, the NH Plus series offers a maximum input current total harmonic distortion (ITHD) of less than 3%, meeting the highest standards in the industry even without adding extra filters. The low ITHD ratio reduces not only capital investment needs, but also the cost of installing cabling and upstream circuitry.
"Delta has designed the NH Plus series UPS to assist customers in reducing waste and conserving energy, as well as in reducing the cost of running their business," says Dr. Charles Tsai, UPS Business Unit General Manager, Delta Electronics.
The new NH Plus series is available in Q3-2009. For more information, contact a Delta representative.
The brains of a telecom power system, the PSC 3 controller is making customers' life easier still with new features. Version 2.40 makes sharing information between the controller and a laptop possible without a TFTP application. Now you need nothing but a web browser, which makes both data transfer and software updates fast and simple. PSC 3 Version 2.40 has been in production since Q2/2009.
More advanced cooling - PSC 3 expansion with fan driver module
Cooling is an energy-intensive part of the operation of a telecom base station. Improved cooling efficiency is therefore significant for lowering costs and reducing the environmental footprint. The PSC 3 controller is now expandable with a fan interface module that controls the fan speed.
"This is the smart feature that's been missing. It doesn't make sense to use full fan capacity unless it's really necessary. This expansion module adjusts the speed based on the temperature, and thus lengthens the lifetime and change cycle of fans. Of course, the module also lowers energy consumption significantly, and reduces fan noise," says Matti Heikkilä, Product Manager, Controllers, Delta Energy Solutions Business Group.
PSC 3 with a fan supervision module is available in Q3/2009 for all Delta OutD systems.
Regional Sales Manager Motaz Al Ma’ani has recently joined Area Sales Manager Tahir Raza, who set up local operations in Dubai towards the end of 2008.
“For years we have been known for quality products and reliability in this region, and now we are working on developing our customer service – a cornerstone of our strategy. We focus on listening to local needs and on responding quickly to our customers’ needs,” says Jorma Autio, Head of Energy Solutions Market Unit, EMEA & SA.
The Dubai office coordinates operations in the Middle East, Northern Africa, Iran and Pakistan. In addition, Delta is present in many Middle Eastern countries through partners, thus offering a local point of contact for customers.
“The Middle East is an important growth region and a hub for many companies in the telecom industry. Delta’s broad portfolio of high-quality products and strong experience in telecom power supply systems forms a solid foundation for our operations in Dubai. By sharing the same time zone and working days we can ensure that our customers receive the service they need without any delay,” says Tahir Raza.
Motaz Al Ma’ani highlights Delta’s customer service philosophy: “Locality combined with Delta’s global network and resources results in the best possible customer service, efficiency and leading-edge products. Our core business is to secure our customers’ vital processes, efficiently. We believe that Delta’s one-stop shopping makes life easier for our customers.”
Mr. Al Ma’ani has extensive experience in business development and sales. Before joining Delta, he worked with fully integrated systems on the conversion and storage of electrical power in telecommunications, utilities, oil and gas, cable, broadband and renewable energy markets – an excellent background for developing Delta’s customer relationships and operations in the Middle East.
More power in a smaller package
“With the new series we can provide at least 20% more power in one shelf than before,” says Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager at Delta.
“The 2.4kW rectifier takes up only half the rack space and weighs up to a fourth less when compared to similar products. We see this as a great solution for everyone involved. The direct and indirect savings in materials and even transportation reduce environmental footprints – as well as freight bills,” Glauser continues.
New look
In connection with the product launch, Delta also unveils the new look of its rectifiers. In the latest customer survey we got the highest ratings for product quality and reliability, as well as for the knowledge and competence of our people. We wanted the look of our products to reflect these extremely important values. You will start to see the new look in all of our systems in Q1–Q2 of 2009.
“The main requirements we have for our suppliers are that they support us in our cost reduction programme and work with us on standardization. We also expect energy efficiency because care for the environment and lower energy consumption are important to us,” said Mr. Sudarshan Shanmugam, Category Manager of Power and Renewable Energy at Vodafone.
Delta is investing continuously in energy-efficient systems and is planning several product launches in 2009. Renewable energy is a hot topic in the industry, and Delta will unveil new products also in that category this year.
Shanmugam also underlined how important it is for Delta to be visible within the Vodafone organization. The Current Delta News, launched in 2008, is an example of how Delta is answering the call to serve our customers even better.
For new devices, Elisa generally chooses the Delta PSC 3 control unit. “Connectivity to the IP network and the wealth of functions and features are our reasons for choosing the PSC 3 controller,” says Välimäki. “PSC 3 is versatile, and the most obvious advantage – as well challenge – for the customer is really being able to choose which features you want and need. The new PSC 3 is an advanced solution, which removes the need to fiddle with laptop configurations because the connection is really easy to set up.”
Välimäki was the lucky winner of an Apple iPod Touch, the prize of our customer survey draw announced in issue 3/2008 of Current Delta News.

“With the new series we can provide at least 20% more power in one shelf than today’s industry standard,” said Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager at Delta Energy Solutions Business Group. “The value can be even higher, as the complete electromagnetic compliance (EMC) and AC overvoltage protection are already built in the product.”
“The 2.4kW rectifier takes up to 50% less rack space and weighs up to 25% less compared to similar products on the market. In addition to its savings in energy consumption with greater than 94 % efficiency, the direct and indirect savings in materials and transportation reduce its environmental footprint—as well as freight bills. Moreover, the space savings, such as for our OutD solutions, leaves more room for customers’ own equipment installations,” said Albert Chang, Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Delta Energy Solutions Business Group.
Power density specifies how much power is packed into a single unit of volume. It is essential in electronic devices as it defines the product’s current flow in relation to size. Thanks to innovative and economical construction, the DPR 2400B-48 series rectifiers are significantly lighter and smaller than existing products.
This product will be available in the first quarter of 2009.
* Telecom power systems secure telecommunication services in case of power interruptions or fluctuations. The essential parts of the system are rectifiers, batteries and a power system controller. The rectifier converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and provides the power necessary to charge the batteries. The power system controller monitors and controls the entire system and site power infrastructure, maximizes battery life, supports energy saving and informs the operator of maintenance needs.
